Many lipedema patients do not even know that they are affected by the disease. On average, it takes up to 10 years from the onset of the first symptoms until the disease is diagnosed by a doctor. This makes it all the more important to inform patients, but also doctors, about the disease. Unfortunately, there is still no diagnostic test that can clearly identify the disease in patients. Science is currently in the early stages of identifying certain indications or markers of changes in the abnormal fat cells. Even examinations such as ultrasound do not allow a definite test. Ultimately, only the clinical diagnosis, the look and feel of the skin of a doctor familiar with the disease lipedema, such as specialists like phlebologists, gynecologists or even plastic surgeons, remains.
A first indication of the possible disease can be a so-called lipedema test (self-test).
